Lake Poroto Wakasagi Smelt Fishing
Wakasagi smelt fishing has become an iconic winter event on Lake Poroto. At times there have been visitors who have caught 100 fish. At the information center which serves as the reception desk visitors can purchase a Wakasagi smelt fishing set, a warm drink, and enjoy fishing without the hassle of hauling equipment. Be sure to dress warmly.
Once you have caught your fish, we recommend deep-frying or stewing them in sweet soy sauce for a tasty dish. Please be sure to bring your own tent, chairs, and equipment and others needed for deep-frying your fish. If you wish to avoid crowds, weekdays are your best bet, as Saturdays and Sundays attract the most customers.
Rental tents (including 3 chairs) are available on site for 1,500, but are limited in number so we suggest you reserve one in advance.

For the bait you will use bottlefly larva. Cut the larva in half and use a little at a time. Just dipping the string in will not do the trick. Instead of wiggling the pole around and feeling the bite with your hand, watch the string and look for the bite. Determine how deep you let your string in by determining the bite. Location is also key. It is great to get advice from those who are catching lots of fish. Depending on the depth of your string, you may even catch big-scaled redfin, but the depth for catching wakasagi smelt is different. If you are catching red fin, you may need to change your depth.
